Lunar New Year, known as Tết in Vietnamese culture, is one of the most significant celebrations in Asian communities worldwide, symbolizing renewal, family reunion, and hope for prosperity. For Vietnamese American families, Tết serves as an essential cultural anchor that helps maintain identity and strengthen community bonds.
This year we’re introducing Mardi Gras & Asian Cajun Village celebrates the unique story of Vietnamese refugees who settled in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, where they integrated with local Cajun culture to create a distinctive Asian-Cajun fusion. This innovative festival honors our shared agricultural heritage—both Mardi Gras and Lunar New Year mark the transition from winter’s scarcity to spring’s abundance, celebrating renewal and community resilience. And to top it all, it’s being held Valentine’s Day weekend. It’s going to be roaring great fun!
What this means is that our usual Lunar New Year Parade in the Park will now be mixed with Mardi Gras fun, in a kind of East Meets West fusion parade! And we’re planning a Second Line Parade in good ol’ New Orleans tradition, going for the world record for longest second line parade ever! We also plan to expand to two stages to accommodate the two cultures, and introduce Valentine’s Day attractions.
With generous support from our sponsors and donors, we expect to celebrate the Lunar New Year with over 10,000 attendees, and 100+ vendors, and many community volunteers. Elk Grove, and the Greater Sacramento region, is a wonderfully diverse region, and what better way to show that off than to create a cultural gumbo. We need your help to turn this into an amazing event that people will talk about for years!
